Refugee Council Sleepout

Hello STAR Members!

In order to highlight the destitution experienced by many refused asylum seekers in the UK the Refugee Council is organising a sleepout in Parliament Square on Monday 19th February, the day before quarterly Home Office asylum statistics are published. They are asking What's so wrong with treating people right?

They are looking for hardy volunteers to spend a night a night on a historic site of protest opposite Parliament. A core team is required who can arrive with their warm clothes and a sleeping bag (covers to keep you dry are supplied), but a small army of helpers on short shifts during the evening on Monday, and from early morning on the Tuesday is also needed.

If you are interested in being a part of this demonstration to highlight the plight of the refused asylum seekers that sleep rough every night as part of the Refugee Council's Just. Fair. campaign contact justfair@refugeecouncil.org.uk.

This is a chance to demonstrate to the public media and MPs that destitute refused asylum seekers have no home and that destitution is not working as a policy. Refused asylum seekers are not leaving the UK – they are here and they are homeless and hungry.

Come along to H202 on Thursday 1st February at 7pm to hear from those with first hand experience of the asylum system. There will also be live music and food available. We will be visited by:

Mr Kirk Mwesigwa, an asylum seeker from Uganda who was detained for seven months.
The London Detainee Support Group.
A representative from Student Action for Refugees National Office.

There will also be information available on the opportunity of volunteering with detainees.

EVENT - Film Showing

At 6pm on Thursday 18th January in S75 we will be showing Shooting Dogs, a film based on the true story of the Rwandan genocide. This is a great chance to meet other members of STAR and become aware of refugee issues not just in the UK but around the world.

Trip to Refugee Exhibition

Hello everyone,

Our first STAR event this year will be a visit to the refugee exhibition in the Museum of London - 'Belonging: Voices of London's Refugees' on Wednesday 29th November.
Everyone is welcome to come along, we will be meeting at 12pm outside Old Building and be travelling there by bus together. Remember to bring your Oyster cards! This is the only cost you will have to cover as the entry to the Exhibition is FREE. This is a great opportunity to become aquainted with Refugee issues and meet other members of STAR!

The new STAR committee has been elected and has already got to work planning events for the coming year and we hope that we will have an exciting and active time.

Last year the UK government locked up over 2000 children -- not for committing any crime, but simply for bureaucratic convenience as a part of the asylum process. The decision is taken by an immigration official and doesn't need to have any judicial review.

These children aren't told how long they will be detained -- it could be weeks or even many months. One third are detained for at least seven days. Detention is traumatic for any child; they feel they are being punished and they don't know why. Many of them have come to the UK to escape terror from state officials in their own country. There's plenty of evidence that the effects of detention are extremely damaging.

The Refugee Council has joined with Save The Children and Bail for Immigration Detainees to fight to stop children being detained. As the campaign is launched, LSE STAR asks you to take three simple and quick steps:

Volunteer interviewers needed!

The STAR nat'l office is looking for volunteer interviewers and focus group moderators in London to interview young refugees and asylum-seekers for a Refugee Council research project, funded by the KPMG Foundation, on the experience of young refugees in secondary schools.

If you have few hours on hand each week for next two months and you already have established links with organisations working with young refugees (eg you volunteer with a youth group, homework club, conversation classe, etc) . . . get in touch with the nat'l office. Training and expenses will be provided.

FILM NIGHT - Afghan Refugees - 3 Mar

LSE's STAR society is holding another film night next week -- please join us! Our theme this time is Afghan refugees. Afghanistan's refugee situation dates back more than 20 years and Afghanistan remains the country of origin of the most refugees in the world, although massive repatriation movements are under way.

We'll be screening the 15 minute UNHCR documentary 'Return to Afghanistan', followed by the award-winning film 'Kandahar' (85 minutes).

Shot on the border of Iran and Afghanistan, 'Kandahar' is a politically urgent story of a young female journalist named Nafas who escaped Afghanistan with her family but must return and race against time in an attempt to rescue her sister. The film is inspired by the real-life experience of actress Nelofer Pazira, who plays Nafas.

STAR would like to flag an upcoming event of interest to our members. Peter Kessler, Senior External Affairs Officer of the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), will speak at LSE in at 7pm in room D302 on Thursday, 9 February. This LSE-SU UN Society event is free and open to all. We'll see you there!

Mr Kessler's extensive experience includes missions to Afghanistan. His speech directly follows the London Conference on Afghanistan, where the Afghanistan Compact was launched. The Compact provides a framework for cooperation between the Government of Afghanistan, the United Nations and the international community for the next five years.

Thanks for joining STAR at the Afghan Kitchen in Islington! We hope you enjoyed the food and conversation. Learn more about Afghan refugees on the UNHCR website here (general site) and here ('Return to Afghanistan' site). Afghans remain the largest refugee group in the world. Nearly two million Afghan refugees reside in Pakistan and Iran, according to the UNHCR.

Join us to commemorate Human Rights Day! Human Rights Day is 10 December and marks the UN General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. The UDHR has become the universal standard for defending and promoting international human rights. LSE's Amnesty International, UNICEF, Student Action for Refugees (STAR) and Film societies have teamed up with the MSc Human Rights Student Committee to screen two human rights-related documentaries week ten -- read on for details . . . 'S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine'
WHAT: This award-winning new documentary is about the Cambodian genocide from 1975-79, when nearly two million Cambodians lost their lives to murder and famine. The notorious 'S21' was a schoolhouse-turned-prison where 17,000 men, women and children were tortured and killed, their "crimes" meticulously documented to justify their execution.

- then, it's a 10 minute walk to the Katherine Low Settlement, a community centre where we will be working with children aged 4-13 years. The kids are all refugees or asylum-seekers, mostly from Somalia, Eritrea, Sub-Saharan Africa and Afghanistan
- The volunteering time is from about 5:45 - 7:30 pm

Refugee Film Week: 1-4 November

In partnership with LSE's Film Society and UNICEF Society, STAR hosted a 'Refugee Film Week' the first week of November. Dozens of students came to enjoy the free screenings. We are currently planning additional screenings for Lent term -- suggestions welcome (please post to the blog). If you missed the films and would like to learn more about them, see below!
